Mihychuk Urges Voters: Tell City Council to Make Chief Peguis Extension its Top Priority

WINNIPEG – The Hon. MaryAnn Mihychuk, MP for Kildonan-St. Paul is urging constituents and voters across Winnipeg to contact Mayor Bowman and their City Councillors to urge them to make the Chief Peguis Extension the city’s main infrastructure priority.

Mihychuk said the Peguis Extension – which has been discussed for decades – is the best fit for Federal Infrastructure Funding that is supposed to be dedicated to major projects that can contribute to the province’s economic growth. Mihychuk says the Peguis extension offers the biggest bang for the buck for public infrastructure dollars.

Instead, City Council is considering bumping Peguis down the list, favouring road resurfacing and projects in the south end of the City – where there are already a number of major projects underway.

“The Peguis extension can be a reality, but first City Council needs to make it a priority,” said Mihychuk. “With Peguis, we have an opportunity create safer, more environmentally sustainable transportation infrastructure that will strengthen our economy, not just be convenient for commuters.”

Mihychuk said one of the major benefits of the Peguis extension is that it enhances access to Centreport – which is even more important with the recently announced “Factory of the Future” in Inkster. CentrePort Canada is North America’s largest inland port, and unique access to tri-modal transportation, including three Class I railways (Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, and BNSF Railway), a 24/7 global air cargo airport and an international trucking hub.

Mihychuk said that a recent open house on the Peguis extension attracted a huge crowd, clearly showing that the community is committed to the project.

“We need to send a message, as a community and as voters to Mayor Bowman and the Executive Policy Committee (EPC) to make it clear – Peguis and North Winnipeg need to be a priority for strategic infrastructure that will drive growth.”

Mihychuk said that voters should call the Mayor and their Councillors to make it clear – Peguis should be a priority:
